FIFA World Cup 2026 Groups & Standings

Overview of all 12 groups competing in the tournament.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 introduces an expanded group stage featuring 12 groups of four teams each, totaling 48 participating nations. This marks the largest World Cup in history and a significant departure from the eight group format used since 1998. Each team plays three group matches, and the standings are determined by total points (three for a win, one for a draw, zero for a loss).

Qualification from the group stage follows a straightforward structure: the top two teams in each group advance automatically to the Round of 32. In addition, the eight best third placed teams across all 12 groups also qualify, bringing the total number of teams in the knockout phase to 32. This system ensures that even a third place finish can be enough to continue in the tournament, adding strategic depth to every group stage fixture.

When teams are level on points within a group, FIFA applies a series of tiebreaker criteria in the following order: goal difference, goals scored, head to head result, fair play points (based on yellow and red cards), and finally a drawing of lots by the FIFA Organizing Committee. The tables below display live standings for each group, updated automatically after every match. Frequently Asked Questions

How many teams qualify from each group?

The top two teams in each group qualify automatically for the Round of 32. Additionally, the eight best third placed teams across all 12 groups also advance. This means 32 of the 48 teams will progress to the knockout stage, giving even third placed sides a realistic chance of continuing in the tournament.

How are the best third placed teams determined?

All 12 third placed teams are ranked against each other using the same criteria applied within group standings: total points, then goal difference, then goals scored, then fair play record. The top eight from this ranking earn a spot in the Round of 32. Because all groups contain four teams and each side plays three matches, the comparison across groups is made on an equal basis.

What happens if two teams are tied on points in the group?

FIFA uses a sequence of tiebreaker criteria when teams finish level on points. The order of priority is: goal difference, total goals scored, head to head result between the tied teams, fair play conduct (fewer yellow and red cards), and as a last resort, a drawing of lots. This layered approach ensures a fair and transparent resolution in virtually every scenario.

Why was the World Cup expanded to 48 teams?

FIFA approved the expansion from 32 to 48 teams in January 2017 to increase global representation and give more nations the opportunity to compete on the world stage. The expanded format also allows additional revenue from broadcasting and sponsorship, while providing fans in more countries with a direct connection to the tournament through their national team's participation.

Where can I see the full match schedule for each group?

You can view the complete match schedule, including kickoff times and venue details, on our Schedule page. Alternatively, click on any individual group card above and select "View Scenarios & Scopes" to see all fixtures and possible outcomes for that specific group.
